floating world
new photographs
September 7 - October 8, 2008
devening projects + editions is very pleased to present Jin Lee's first solo exhibition with the gallery. floating world brings together work from two recent projects "Small Mountains" and "Lake Effect," a series of photographs that evoke a deep sense of time that extends far beyond the present. Made in areas around Lake Michigan during winter seasons, the work examines various effects of the presence of a large body of water, from the gray clouds that cover the sky to the piles of salt gathered to combat lake effect snow.
Taking its title from the 17th century Japanese Buddhist term for the ephemeral pleasures of the world, as well as the geological condition of the earth as a dynamic moving body with its crust floating, the exhibition will feature photographs of natural materials and conditions that are in constant state of transformation: waves on the lake, winter trees, and stark otherworldly landscapes formed by snow, sand, and salt.
Jin Lee lives in Chicago and teaches at Illinois State University.
